Welcome! My name is Nicole Kliewer. I am currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Villanova University. My primary research agenda focuses on campaigns, elections, Congress, and the role of the military in American politics. Prior to Villanova University, I was a 2022-2023 APSA Congressional Fellow and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz School of Information Systems and Public Policy and the Carnegie Mellon Institute for Strategy and Technology.
I study how military group membership and identity contribute to former service members’ political participation and characterize the long-term consequences of politicized military activity for civil-military relations. In my dissertation project, I used participant observations, survey experiments, text as data, and electoral returns to investigate the role of military service in political campaigns.
I received my Ph.D. and M.A. in Politics from Princeton University as well as a B.A. in Political Science and B.S. in International Affairs from Florida State University.
